Preparation:
- Start with 1 cup of milk at 100°F and add 2 ½ tsp or 1 package of active dry yeast and 1 tsp of sugar. Stir it up till mixed and then let it sit for 10 minutes until it’s foamy.
- Add ¼ cup of sugar, ½ tsp salt, 1 egg, ¼ cup melted butter and 2 cups of flour. Mix on a low speed until well combined, then begin to gradually add 1 extra cup of flour till the dough is no longer sticking to the bowl. Increase the speed slightly and let it knead for 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a pre-greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it sit for at least 1 hour until the dough has roughly doubled in size.
- Take the dough and dump it out onto a floured surface. Smack it down and roll out to about 1/2 inch thickness. It’s best to cut out 10-12 donuts using a 3-inch round cutter and a 1-inch round cutter to remove the center.
- Transfer donuts and donut holes to lightly floured parchment paper and cover loosely with greased plastic wrap. Let donuts rise until close to double in volume, about 30 minutes.
- Preheat Air Fryer to, 350° F
- Spray the Air Fryer basket with cooking spray then transfer donuts to the Air Fryer basket in a single layer. Spray donuts with cooking spray and cook at 350° F until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side.
- Repeat with remaining donuts and holes.
- While the donuts are cooking, melt butter 6 Tbsps in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in 2 cups of powdered sugar and 2 tsp vanilla extract until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in hot water one tablespoon at a time until the icing is somewhat thin, but not watery. Set aside for dipping, or spreading over the doughnuts to your liking.
