You have probably heard many people rave about their air fryer and a fewer set of people say it’s a worthless kitchen item and the truth is probably somewhere in between. You may have seen on social media people rave about their air fryer and when they see videos of people using them, they will call out the user saying it wasn’t used properly and if you put the right kind of oil on in the right method, it will taste phenomenal.

And maybe they are correct, that the food does taste phenomenal or (gasp) the same as if it was deep fried. Well I am here to say, and I am betting the science will back me up, that no amount of oil or method for adding oil will ever make your “air fried” food taste like it was in a deep fryer. Cooking in air, not matter how hot, how much oil is added or in what manner, is not the same a cooking in oil.
The air fryer by itself is a small convection oven in the same sense that a toaster oven is a small oven. And that’s where it’s advantage comes in. With a smaller volume, it is able to move the air faster and thus keep the small container hotter than you would find in a traditional oven. While the circulating hot air is a great way to quickly cook foods, it will not replace the deep fryer in terms of taste.
But don’t get me wrong, I love our air fryer for certain dishes and in certain circumstances. Brussel sprouts become amazing when cooked in an air fryer as well as baked chicken or even a “rotisserie” chicken can be handled quite well in an air fryer, just don’t expect your food to taste like it came out of the deep fryer.
That being said, our air fryer does a phenomenal job on home made or frozen store bought French Fries. And we currently love to use the air fryer for heating up frozen foods like pizza, taquitos, chicken nuggets and other items as well as heating up left overs, Just don’t expect to be able to heat up enough to feed a family of 4 with just one use of the air fryer because it doesn’t have the volume. It’s best for a side dish or for meals for 2.
