Can You Make This Cheap, Spicy and Healthy Fish Dish?

This spicy braised fish in a tomato sauce can really heat up your dinner and provide a great flavor to your otherwise tasteless fish. A nice tilapia or mahi mahi would be a great fish to place within this awesome sauce.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon paprika $0.31
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander $0.33
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cumin $0.19
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon $0.02
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne $0.04
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil $0.35
  • 4 cloves garlic, grated or finely chopped $0.11
  • 1 6 oz can tomato paste $0.58
  • 1 Bunch of Spinach $1.49
  • 2 teaspoons sugar $0.01
  • 1¼ teaspoons kosher salt $0.05
  • Freshly ground black pepper $0.02
  • 4 skinless fish fillets $5.33

Preparation:

  1. Slice zucchini and mash the garlic
  2. Mix paprika, coriander, cumin, cinnamon, and cayenne in a small bowl.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium. Add paprika mixture and garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring constantly, until darkened, about 1 minute. Stir in 2 cups water, sugar, salt, and several grinds of pepper; add spinach and zucchini, cover and bring to a simmer over medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally and breaking up spinach with a spoon, until spinach is dispersed, 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Nestle fish in sauce and return to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium and cook, covered, until fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork, 5 to 10 minutes depending on thickness.
