Does a Cast Iron Skillet Actually Make Your Steak Better?

Whenever you watch those steak videos of how to prepare a steak in a skillet, most invariably they are using cast iron because they are taught that cast iron will improve the flavor. Well most people I know tend to want to have non-stick skillets in their home because they are more convenient to clean and the food tends to stick less. So should you have a cast iron skillet for your steaks? Let’s find out.

Ingredients:

  • Filet Mignon Medallions
  • 8 turns of a pepper grinder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Preparation:

  1. Preheat skillet to highest heat possible
  2. Add oil to the pan
  3. Sear all sides of the steak in the oil turning occasionally

The Verdict

Both steaks were seasoned similarly and cooked similarly so naturally their flavor was similar. So similar in fact that the steaks were nearly indistinguishable from each other. While the tasters gave a slight edge to the cast iron skillet, the difference wasn’t that large and they would easily have enjoyed either steak.
