If you’ve ever wanted to cook your own French fries or have a desire to have consistently thin slices of vegetables, then you’ve probably though of buying a mandoline for your kitchen. The problem is, most mandolines put your fingers near the very sharp blades that are used to cut your food. Now you can buy some cut resistant gloves to shield your fingers, and they will work admirably, or you can purchase a Dash Safe Slice mandoline that in it’s design keeps your fingers away from the blade.
The Video Review
The Dash Safe Slice works by moving the blade instead of the vegetable you are trying to slice. It works great at keeping your hand away from the blade as it involves a chute that the food travels down and lets gravity and a pusher put the food next to the blade. If you’ve seen a deli slicer, then the Dash Safe Slice works similar to one of those, except instead of moving the food, you move the blade.
First off, I love my Dash Safe Slice and I use it instead of the other mandaline’s I have purchased. The ease of which it slices without the need for getting your fingers close to the blade is a definite plus. Setting it up to cut French fries or slicing any vegetable are very easy. It’s also a nice feature that as you turn the dial, you will know exactly how thick in mm your dice is going to be since the number on the dial is the amount of mm thick your slice is going to be.
Another advantage the Dash Safe Slice has is the ease of which it slices mushrooms. I love cooking with mushrooms, but I hate slicing each individual mushroom. When I’ve used a mandoline to slice mushrooms, the softness of the mushroom makes it hard for the blade of the mandoline to slice them easily. This is not a problem with the Dash Safe Slice as when I put the mushrooms in the food chute, they have no where to go and get sliced to my desired thickness.
But after putting the Dash Safe Slice to the test, I can assure you that for consistent and long cuts of vegetables, a regular mandoline will out perform the Dash Safe Slice. For example, because of the food chute, the potatoes need to be small enough to fit inside so that they can get to the blade. This makes it so that the French fries you cut will be at most about 2 inches in length, or the width of the potato. By contrast, a standard mandoline will be able to cut the whole length of the potato, so the fries can be as long as the potato.
In another example, if you do not fill up the chute with your vegetables, they have a tendency to fall down and give you long slices instead of the short slices that you are likely to be looking for. This is true for the long vegetables like carrots and celery.
Despite these difficulties, I do not use my mandoline anymore. Even though I cannot get a long length for French fries and needing to fill the chute so that the shapes of slices come out even when using a Dash Safe Slice, I am willing to not have the perfect slices for my mushrooms and having short French fries in exchange for the ease of use and safety offered by a Dash Safe Slice mandoline.
I am very pleased with my Dash Safe Slice purchase, and won’t go back to a flat mandoline.
