I remember back in my days visiting the Los Angeles Zoo, there was this stand that served shaved ice. It was so much better than those frozen snow cones you could get from 7-11. The ice was pillowy soft and the vendor drizzled a lot of syrup over the ice making each mouthful cool, refreshing and flavor packed.
Around the same time, we also visited a Korean health spa that offered their own version of shaved ice. Again, the ice was pillowy soft, but this time it was topped with sweet red bean paste, condensed milk, strawberries, mangos, kiwi, and other delightful fruits. I was taken aback by the combination of flavors combined with the soft ice as I devoured the flavorful concoction.

Having tried these two vastly different types of shaved ice and having enjoyed them both, I wondered if I had to visit those places to enjoy the heavenly treat or if I could recreate the same delightful flavors right in my own home. After many different experiments with manual ice shavers that require you to freeze ice in their specifically designed containers, I saw this machine on Amazon that uses any ice you have on hand and decided to give it a try.
Boy was I impressed. The shaved ice coming from this device comes out as a fine powder and not chunky like in the manual shavers. It works fast and with any ice you have on hand, whether you freeze your own or buy it from the store. So now, I can recreate those beautiful concoctions from both the zoo and from the Korean spa right in my own home with the only limitation being my imagination as to what the topping should be.
