Maybe you’re eating at McDonald’s because it’s one of the cheaper restaurant options for you, or maybe you want to eat at McDonald’s because you love the food. But what if I told you that you could easily cook a filet mignon in your own home for about the same price as the dinner you just bought at McDonald’s? Would you believe me. Well let me show you just how much we spent at McDonald’s and at Costco back in 2019.
McDonald’s Meal (2019 Prices) | Filet Mignon Dinner (2019 Prices) |
---|---|
10 Chicken Tenders $9.89 10 McNuggets $4.49 1 Large Fries $3.59 1 Small Fries $1.89 1 Big Mac $4.89 1 Small Frapauccino $2.00 1 Small Vanilla Shake $2.59 1 Ice Cream Cone $1.69 Tax $2.40 | Filet Mignon 2 lbs Filet Mignon $31.98 1 Tbsp Olive Oil $0.12 1 tsp Salt $0.01 1 tsp Pepper $0.10 Baked Potatoes 2 Tbsp olive oil $0.23 4 Potatoes $0.80 1 Tbsp Kosher Salt $0.06 1 tsp Pepper $0.14 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder $0.12 |
Total: $33.43 | Total: $33.57 |
So each of the 4 people in my family are going to get an 8 oz filet mignon and a baked potato for about the same price as the full meal we had at McDonald’s. But don’t take my word for it, price it for yourself. Have a meal at McDonald’s with your family and check the prices of a filet mignon at your local store to see if it matches up for you.
You don’t know how to cook filet mignon? Well, I’ve got you covered. My tried and true recipe for cooking a medium rare filet mignon over a grill (same method will work for a skillet as well) is below. Try it for yourself and happy eating.

Preparation:
- Let the steaks sit out in room temperature for 30 minutes to 2 hours to become room temperature
- Fire up the grill to high heat – 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Drizzle olive oil on the steaks and rub it in.
- Sprinkle salt and pepper over the steaks and rub it in.
- Place the steaks on the grill. (the timing is for medium rare steaks. For more well done steaks, use indirect heat to continue to cook the steaks to your likeness after the 10 minutes of cooking on the grill is done)
- After 2 minutes and 30 seconds. flip the steaks
- After another 2 minutes and 30 seconds, flip the steaks and turn the steak 1/4 turn to make cross hatched grill marks
- After another 2 minutes and 30 seconds, flip the steaks one last time.
- After the last 2 minutes and 30 seconds, take the steaks off the grill and let rest for 10 minutes.
