Local Hot Spot Makes the Greatest Burgers and Onion Rings

Whenever we are traveling to a new city, we take time to research the area and see what the hot restaurants are in the area. Seeing as we were going to be eating on Father’s Day, the wife left the Sunday’s restaurant choice up to me. So as I checked a few different web sites, one the common places that showed up was Hodad’s and me being a lover of burgers, though that this place might be a great place for Dads.

We arrived at a non peak time of 4 pm on a Sunday and the restaurant was already packed. Very few empty tables but the waiter found us a spot and recommended for us the half onion rings half fries basket which is a great idea for the first time eating at this restaurant. We love fries, but we would not have tried the best onion rings I’ve ever had if we didn’t.

The fries are a better version of the wedge fries at KFC, but the onion rings were off the hook good. The outer coating was very crisp from a terrific deep fry and the onion inside had you standard flavor and softness one wants from an onion ring. Personally, when I eat there again, I am choosing onion rings only but I’m sure Happy Healthy Daughter would prefer the fries still.

The chicken tenders aren’t something I would be ordering, but they are good enough to satisfy the young children you might have with you.

I also tried the chicken burger which is dressed the same as their regular burgers and comes with a ground chicken patty instead of a beef one. So if you prefer the flavor of chicken, this burger will do you no wrong.

Ultimately though I wanted to try the burger. One of their favorites is the bacon cheeseburger and who doesn’t like bacon on their burger. I was thinking like an In ‘n’ Out burger that one patty would be kinds small so I went for a double, but that was a mistake. If you really love having burger patties in your burger, then go for the double, but as for me, a single would have sufficed.

That being said, the burger itself with the bacon, cheese, tomato, raw onion slices, pickles, lettuce, ketchup and mustard was a taster’s delight. The freshness of the vegetables, the salty, crispy bacon and the burger melded together for a one of a kind flavor that I am looking forward to having again the next time I visit San Diego.

To top it all off, we ended off with a chocolate malt. Growing up, my mom made Ovaltine malts. For those of you who don’t know, Ovaltine is a chocolate flavored powder that you would add to milk to increase the nutrition and enhance the flavor, so I was hoping to relive a little nostalgia with the flavor of a malt instead of a milk shake, and boy did Hodad’s deliver. The malt was chocolatey good and the malt flavor just enhanced the experience to a heavenly mouthful of flavor. So skip the milkshake and go for the malt.
