Garlic grating, lemon zesting, spice mincing. These are some of the common uses for a Microplane. You may have seen videos of chef’s using this very sharp gadget and wondered if it’s a worth addition to your own kitchen. I was wondering myself so I ended up getting one and gave it a whirl on many common items like garlic, parmesan cheese, lemons, walnuts and the like.
The Video Review
One thing you need to watch out for is that this microplane is sharp. Unlike a hand held cheese grater, I did cut myself trying to use it to grate garlic. Also, when grating garlic or parmesan cheese or anything else, it’s harder to get all the shreds our of the microplane than it is a regular fine cheese grater. The sharpness of the teeth, the 90° edge on the back side both make it difficult to run your finger either on the blades or along the back side to clear out your shavings.
This is one of those devices that seems like a great tool to have, but for me, it continues to collect dust in the drawer while I take out the fine cheese grater every day when I need to shred or mince something.
