Will Chicken Thighs in a Pressure Cooker Taste Better Than When Made in an Oven?

No doubt the pressure cooker in my kitchen produces consistently cooked chicken that is never undercooked when the pieces are pressure cooked for 15 minutes. I personally have a much harder time even when I do use a thermometer making sure that the chicken thighs that come out of the oven are not underdone with red juiced waiting for me near the bone. But what about the flavor of the chicken? Do the chicken thighs taste better from the oven or from a pressure cooker?

Ingredients:

  • 4 skin on bone in chicken thighs
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon pepper
  • 1/4 tablespoon basil

Preparation:

Oven
  1. Preheat the oven to 300° F
  2. In a bowl large enough for 4 chicken thighs, combine together oil, garlic, salt, pepper and basil.
  3. Place the thighs into the bowl and make sure to get the marinade all around the chicken. Put the thighs on a rack and place them in the oven for 45 minutes.
  4. After 45 minutes, heat the oven up to 425° F and cook the chicken for another 30 minutes to crispen up the skin or until a meat thermometer registers 165°F when inserted near the bone.
Pressure Cooker
  1. In a bowl large enough for 4 chicken thighs, combine together oil, garlic, salt, pepper and basil.
  2. Place the thighs into the bowl and make sure to get the marinade all around the chicken.
  3. Set the pressure cooker to sauté and brown the skin.
  4. Take out the chicken, put in the trivet, add 1 cup of water and place the chicken on the trivet. Set the pressure cooker to pressure cook for 12 minutes.
  5. Take the chicken out and serve

Results

The chicken from the pressure cooker was very tender, tasty and quite moist and juicy. The chicken from the oven ended up with a crispy skin while also being tender but not as tender as the pressure cooker chicken. If you like a crispy skin, go with the oven if you have the time. If you are short on time or prefer a more tender, juicy chicken, go with the pressure cooker.
