An old staple of many a greasy spoon restaurant is the patty melt. What’s not to like? You get a nice crispy toasted bread on the outside with gooey, melty cheese draped all over the chopped onion and burger patty on the inside. It’s a grilled cheese with meat and grilled onions. But what if it wasn’t as greasy. Would it still be enjoyable?
Ingredients:
- 8 Slices of French Loaf $1.67
- 4 1/3 lb. Hamburger Patties $4.95
- 1 Tbsp Oil $0.12
- 1 tsp Salt $0.04
- 1 tsp pepper $0.10
- 1 Onion, Chopped $0.17
- 6 oz. Cheddar Cheese, Shredded $1.50
- 1/4 tsp – Cayenne Pepper $0.04
- ¼ cup drained, finely diced, jarred roasted red bell peppers $1.00
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise $0.20
- 1 tsp Salt $0.04
- 1 tsp pepper $0.10
- 4 Tbsp Butter $0.46
- 2 tsp Parmesan $0.05
- 2 tsp Garlic Powder $0.08

Preparation:
- Prepare the Cheese mixture:
- Place 1/4 cup of mayonnaise, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp pepper and 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper in a bowl and whisk together. add the cheese and chopped bell peppers and mix thoroughly. Refrigerate till ready to use.
- Chopping the Onion into large portions
- Slicing the French loaf to about 3/4 of an inch of thickness
- Drizzle oil on the hamburger patties, add a dash of salt and pepper. Flip the burgers and repeat
- Melt 2 Tbsp of butter in a skillet on medium heat. Add the Onions and cook stirring occasionally.
- While the onion is cooking, grill the meat. I usually grill the meat for 3 minutes on each side with a 1/4 turn half way through for more even grill marks on the patties
- Once the onions are golden brown, take them off the fire.
- On 4 slices of the bread, add 1/2 of the cheese mixture, top each with a meat patty, add the onions, top with the other 1/2 of the cheese mixture and cover with the other slice of bread.
- Melt 1 Tbsp of butter in the skilled, add 1 tsp parmesan cheese and 1 tsp garlic powder. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook till golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, and then take them out of the pan.
- For the other side, Melt another 1 Tbsp of butter in the skilled, add another 1 tsp parmesan cheese and 1 tsp garlic powder. Place the sandwiches untoasted side down in the skillet and cook till golden brown, about 2-3 minutes, and then take them out of the pan.
- Slice and serve.
