This isn’t my first set of gravity electric salt and pepper grinders, but these are an improvement over the previous design that I tried. What’s better, for starters this pair from Senzer doesn’t require AA batteries which makes them much lighter to handle and they come with their own charging station which gives them a permanent holder/charger on the countertop or table top for people to use. In addition, they have an on/off switch which allows you to hold them upside down or even knock them on their side without having them automatically turn on.
The Video Review
But why do you need gravity salt and pepper grinders in the first place? Well for me it was a matter of wanting to season my meat and vegetables without using the oily, greasy, contaminated hand to hold or turn a manual grinder. This allows me to easily add fresh ground pepper and salt directly to the food without the need to wash my hands when I need to turn over or flip the food to season the other side.
Aside from the practical reason, I actually find it fun to use these electric grinders. Just flip them over (and turn on a switch) and let the pepper and salt pour out onto your food. It’s much more fun than the standard shaking of a jar or needing to use two hands to grind your pepper. But I wasn’t satisfied with being able to grind my pepper and salt, I also wanted to know if it improved the flavor over the standard pre ground spices.
And so I decided to try out an electric pepper grinder on some egg whites. I salt and peppered some egg whites and let my children and their friend try the difference between fresh ground and pre ground. I also salted and peppered some filet mignons before cooking and had my kids and a friend give the fresh ground a taste test when compared with pre ground that you would buy in the store.
As you watch the video below, you can see that the kids could notice a difference when comparing the egg whites, but the flavors of the salt and pepper on the cooked filet mignon were not very pronounced. So going against what most chefs I’ve seen say about pepper, if you’re going to pepper to a dish before you cook it, it won’t matter if the pepper is fresh or not.
Be that as it may, I still love to use the electric grinders over the pre ground or regular hand twisting grinders simply because it’s more fun. And since these pepper and salt grinders aren’t going to burn a hole in your wallet, I find that they are a fine addition to my kitchen arsenal. Unfortunately, at the time of the publishing, the salt and pepper grinders that I used which require AA batteries are no longer available on Amazon, but I the rechargeable set of electric gravity salt and pepper grinders are still available and I tend to like them even more. I have included links to both of them down below.
