When I lived in the bay area, my coworkers had a theory: if a restaurant has “Thai” in it’s name, then the Thai food in that restaurant is good. So with a name like Supatras Thai Restaurant, we are feeling that the Thai food must be good.
We started with the Avocado salad which was a standard green salad with avocado and some fried tofu to go along with a ginger dressing and a peanut dressing. The ginger dressing was surprisingly good with a nice tang to offset a standard sweet sauce. The peanut sauce was a nice addition, but personally, I preferred the ginger sauce.
On to the main courses. We went off of our usual menu by getting the garlic string beans which were crispy and flavorful with a nice overtone of garlic. A great vegetable that is better than most of the vegetables I eat in American restaurants.
For the rice, we went with the bar-b-que pork fried rice. The pork was very tender with a sweet coating that matched well with the rice.
We continued with the scallops and shrimp red curry. Somehow the shrimp didn’t taste like it had any curry in it while the scallops were able to soak up the curry flavor. The vegetables included in the dish were nice and crisp and flavored with a sweet and savory curry flavor and the spicy level wasn’t that high.
The last dish we added was the Karee Gai with beef – you can choose any meat you want to add to the dish – a yellow curry with potatoes carrots and coconut milk. The flavor was very strong and permeated the dish. A great dish that deserved it’s spot on my plate. In general, if you want a curry dish, I would probably stick with the curries listed under the curry section as those will be packed with a grand curry flavor that will also mix well with the rice that you choose.
So did it pass the Thai test? Yes it did. If you are looking for a tasty Thai restaurant in Southern California, Supatras Thai would be a fine restaurant to try.
